Swim England North West are looking for the next generation of aspiring coaches. We believe, this course will equip you with the knowledge and tools to develop your knowledge, skills and abilities ahead of becoming an independent swimming coach.
To register your place on this course you will be required to make a payment of £225.
Once you have finished all the theory, and practical sessions have been organised and promoted, you can book your practical session and make your final payment of £200.
Individuals who successfully complete the course may (subject to bursary criteria being met) be able to access the Regional Coaching Bursary. Lancashire County club members can also access the Pat Gabbitas Fund.
Training Format
- Blended Learning is a more flexible approach where you complete the theoretical elements of the course online through interactive activities and checks on learning, prior to the practical workshops. The online learning and completion of assessments should take you are approximately 20-25 hours to complete.
- The course theory and online learning will commence on Thursday 8th April (6-7pm) followed by Zoom learning Tuesday 13th April (6-9pm), Thursday 15th April (6-9pm), Sunday 18th April (9am-12pm), Tuesday 20th April (6-9pm), Friday 23rd April (6-9pm) and Sunday 25th April (9am-12pm). Timings may be subject to slight changes.
- Practical sessions will be arranged once pools have re-opened and clubs are back into a training routine.
- Full timetable will be provided upon full registration with the Institute of Swimming.
- Please ensure that you bring adequate food and drink for all the sessions, as refreshments will not be provided.
- Individuals are responsible for their own personal belongings during the course.
Who is the course designed for?
Anyone who has a Swim England Assistant Swimming Coach certificate who wants to become an independent coach.
Course Content
The course is delivered through a mixture of classroom activities and practical poolside learning. You will participate in at least six training sessions, coaching swimmers at county standard and above, to gain hands on practical experience.
You will learn about:
- Roles and responsibilities of a Swimming Coach
- Understand the legal requirements of coaching swimming
- Impact of the Athlete Development Support Pathway in competitive swimming
- Physical literacy in swimming
- Scientific principles of competitive swimming
- Competitive swimming skills
- Types of training used to develop swimmers
- Planning, delivery and evaluation of a series of sessions
- Effective management in training and competition
- Communication skills within the swimming coaching environment
- Motivational techniques
- Developing swimming skills and competitive swimming strokes
- Evaluating swimmer progress
- Reflecting and evaluating on own performance
- Planning for professional development.
Pre-Requisites
You must be at least 18 years of age (prior to the start of the online learning) and hold the Swim England Assistant Swimming Coach, ASA Level 1 Award (QCF) in Coaching Swimming or equivalent Swim England/ASA Qualification.
