Commonwealth Games Success for North West Athletes

The Commonwealth Games, which took place in Glasgow from 23rd July to 2nd August, delivered another unforgettable chapter for aquatics across the North West, with a number of swimmers from across the region producing outstanding performances for their home nations, against some of the world’s top athletes.

From Commonwealth records and medal-winning swims to national records and historic relay performances, athletes from around the North West represented their respective nations, showcasing their strength, talent and dedication on an international stage.

Every medal, personal best and finals appearance is supported by a network of coaches, officials, volunteers, team managers and families.

Their commitment creates the opportunities that allow athletes to develop and achieve at the highest levels of the sport.

Congratulations to every swimmer, coach and volunteer on their selection to compete at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this year.

Georgia Sheffield Strikes Gold

One of the standout moments of the Games came from Georgia Sheffield, who delivered a sensational performance to win Commonwealth gold in the Women’s S14 200m Freestyle.

Georgia’s record-breaking swim was a fitting reward for years of dedication and preparation and provided one of the highlights of the championships.

James Guy Adds to His Medal Collection

Three-time Olympian and one of Britain’s most decorated swimmers, James Guy, once again demonstrated his class by securing three silver medals.

International Success for Luke Greenbank

Luke Greenbank continued his impressive record at major championships, returning to the podium with:

  • 🥉 Men’s 200m Backstroke

Amelie Blocksidge

  • 7th Place – Women’s 1500m Freestyle (16:27.55)
  • 8th Place – Women’s 800m Freestyle (8:38.80)

Team Isle of Man Makes History

The Isle of Man celebrated a landmark championships after selecting a record-breaking squad featuring 14 swimmers from clubs within the North West Region.

The team delivered a series of memorable performances, setting multiple Manx National Records and reaching several finals.

Mixed 4x100m Freestyle Relay (Ella Justice, Kiera Prentice, Harry Robinson, Joel Watterson)

  • 8th Place Finalists
  • Manx National Record – 3:38.65

Men’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay (Joel Watterson, Harry Robinson, Magnus Kelly, Peter Allen)

  • 6th Place Finalists
  • Manx National Record – 3:23.89

Men’s 4x100m Medley Relay (Charles Foster, Alex Turnbull, Peter Allen, Joel Watterson)

  • Manx National Record – 3:53.74

Women’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay (Ella Justice, Kiera Prentice, Lauren Dennett, Libby Curphey)

  • Manx National Record – 4:01.51

Mixed 4x100m Medley Relay (Peter Allen, Laura Kinley, Ella Justice, Joel Watterson)

  • Manx National Record – 4.03.32

  • Harry Robinson setting a Manx National Record in the 50m Backstroke (26.16)
  • Ella Justice reaching the 100m Backstroke semi-finals
  • Ella Justice setting a Manx National Record in the 50m Freestyle (26.38)
  • Kiera Prentice breaking the one-minute barrier for 100m Freestyle
  • Laura Kinley reaching 50m Breaststroke semi-finals
  • Alex Turnbull winning his 50m Breaststroke heat with a personal best swim and Manx National Record (28.51)
  • Joel Watterson setting a Manx National Record in the 50m Freestyle (23.03)  and 100m Freestyle (50.20)

While the athletes delivered the performances in the pool, these successes reflect the dedication of coaches, officials, volunteers and families who continue to support aquatics across the North West.

Congratulations to everyone involved in a truly outstanding Commonwealth Games campaign.  With the Commonwealth Games flag now officially handed over to Ahmedabad, India for the 2030 centennial games, the preparation starts now!
