Swim England Coaching Policy

Swim England’s existing Coaching and Teaching Statement from 2018 has been reviewed and a new Coaching Policy has been developed to focus on expected coaching qualifications whilst delivering any club activity or attendance at competitions.

The new policy is a minimum expectation for affiliated clubs in relation to coaching qualifications and is applicable for all disciplines.

The guidance also coincided with the introduction of the Teaching and Coaching Register, which is a comprehensive register for coaches and teachers operating within Swim England clubs.

As a reflection of the development work in relation to Club Affiliation (previously Stronger Affiliation) and Swim England’s intent to continue to raise standards, the National Governing Body has revised its guidance to create a policy on the minimum standards of coaching.

The policy demonstrates the strong alignment between the coaching approach and the development approach of Swim England.

Other sections within the policy include coaching expectations for masters/adult only sessions, dry land training and open water activities.

“For club coaching and training sessions, Swim England requires that there is at least one active Coach / Level 2 equivalent as a minimum on poolside who is responsible for the activities taking place.

Coaches are qualified and insured to coach within the scope of their qualification and any other relevant training that they have undertaken and successfully completed. Coaches must not deliver activities beyond the scope of their competence and expertise. This relates to both poolside and dry-land training.”
