Coaching (Swimming) Course – Trafford

Swim England North West are looking for the next generation of aspiring coaches. We believe, this course will equip you with the knowledge and tools to develop your knowledge, skills and abilities ahead of becoming an independent swimming coach. The cost of the course is £425. Individuals who successfully complete the course may (subject to bursary criteria being met) be able to access the Regional Coaching Bursary.  Lancashire County club members can also access the Pat Gabbitas Fund.

Training Format

• Due to COVID-19, Swim England North West have been working hard to arrange a course which can predominately be completed online, with practical sessions to be delivered once swimming pools and clubs are back open.
  • • Blended Learning is a more flexible approach where you complete the theoretical elements of the course online through interactive activities and checks on learning, prior to the practical workshops. The online learning and completion of assessments should take you are approximately 20-25 hours to complete.

  Please ensure that you are able to commit to all of the dates outlined below.

  • Introduction Online Meeting will take place on: Friday 7th August 2020 (7-8pm via Zoom).
  • Online learning will commence on:  Monday 10th August 2020 (individuals will have 4 weeks to complete this online work).
  • Theory Online Meeting will take place on:  Monday 7th September, Wednesday 9th September, Monday 14th September, Friday  18th September, Monday 21st September and Wednesday 23rd September (all sessions will be 6-9pm via Zoom).
  • Face to Face Practical sessions will take place on:  Saturday 10th October (6.30-8.45am at Altrincham Leisure Centre), Sunday 11th October (4.30-8.30pm at Sale Leisure Centre), Saturday 17th October (6.30-8.45am at Altrincham Leisure Centre) and Sunday 18th October (4.30-8.30pm at Sale Leisure Centre).

• • Full timetable will be provided once confirmation on swimming pools opening and club returning to training has been established.

Who is the course designed for?

Anyone who has a Swim England Assistant Swimming Coach certificate who wants to become an independent coach.

Course content

The course is delivered through a mixture of classroom activities and practical poolside learning. You will participate in at least six training sessions, coaching swimmers at county standard and above, to gain hands on practical experience.

You will learn about:

• Understand the legal requirements of coaching swimming
• Impact of the Athlete Development Support Pathway in competitive swimming
• Physical literacy in swimming
• Scientific principles of competitive swimming
• Competitive swimming skills
• Types of training used to develop swimmers
• Planning, delivery and evaluation of a series of sessions
• Effective management in training and competition
• Communication skills within the swimming coaching environment
• Motivational techniques
• Developing swimming skills and competitive swimming strokes
• Evaluating swimmer progress
• Reflecting and evaluating on own performance
• Planning for professional development.

Pre-Requisites

You must be at least 18 years of age (prior to the start of the online learning) and hold the Swim England Assistant Swimming Coach, ASA Level 1 Award (QCF) in Coaching Swimming or equivalent Swim England/ASA Qualification.
