Swim England North West are looking for the next generation of aspiring coaches. We believe, this course will equip you with the knowledge and tools to actively support a Water Polo coach in the delivery of a planned training session. The cost of the course is £500.

Individuals who successfully complete the course may (subject to bursary criteria being met) be able to access the Regional Coaching Bursary.  Lancashire County club members can also access the Pat Gabbitas Fund.

Training Format

  • Blended Learning is a more flexible approach where you complete the theoretical elements of the course online through interactive activities and checks on learning, prior to the practical workshops. The online learning and completion of assessments should take you are approximately 15-20 hours to complete.
  • Online learning will be on the Tuesday 8th March, Tuesday 12th April, Tuesday 26th April, Tuesday 10th May and Tuesday 24th May 2022. All sessions will run 6-9pm
  • Face to Face session will be on Friday 3rd June, Friday 10th June, Friday 17th June and Friday 24th June at East Manchester Leisure Centre. The sessions will run from 7-8:30pm.
  • Full timetable will be provided upon full registration with the Institute of Swimming.

Who is the course designed for?

Anyone who has a Swim England Assistant Water Polo Coach certificate who wants to become an independent coach.

Course Content

The course is delivered through a mixture of classroom activities and practical poolside learning. You will participate in at least three training sessions, coaching swimmers at county standard and above, to gain hands on practical experience.
You will learn about:

  • Roles and responsibilities of a Water Polo coach
  • Nutrition and hydration for Water Polo
  • Bio-mechanical principles in Water Polo
  • Key physical and mental qualities of a skilled player
  • Planning, delivery and evaluation
  • How to coach Water Polo sessions
  • Session management skills
  • Communication skills within the coaching environment
  • How to use a variety of coaching methods to meet player needs
  • Developing technique
  • Motivational techniques
  • How to support performers and assistant coaches
  • Evaluating your own performance
  • Planning for professional development

Pre-Requisites

You must be at least 18 years of age and be a member of a Swim England affiliated club. Individuals must also hold the Swim England Assistant Water Polo coach, ASA Level 1 Award (QCF) in Coaching Water Polo or equivalent Swim England/ASA qualification.
